One of the most popular reclaimed wood that we offer at Salvage Michigan is barn wood. During the 19th and early 20th century, people built their barns using a mix of lumber found on their land. Although first made for durability, today, its style and use ranges from accenting a mountain escape to a minimal space. Weathered by years of rain, snow, and heat, barn wood offers a rustic look that belongs in any kind of interior and its history tells a story.
Types of Barn Siding
There are two types of reclaimed barn siding.
One type of reclaimed barn siding is grey barn siding, the weathered exterior of the barns that have been salvaged. These planks faced exposure from sun, rain, and snow for decades. Due to this exposure, the color tone of the wood changes, ranging from a silvery grey to a deep brown patina.
The second type of reclaimed barn siding is natural barn siding, the non-exterior side of the painted barn siding that has not been exposed to the elements. Because it has not been exposed to the elements, the color tone of the reclaimed wood is a rich, antique barn that has developed over the years.
Cleaning Barn Siding
Salvage Michigan processes the barn siding to give your project the best quality barn wood siding available. We remove the metals from each plank. Then we lightly wash the surface, removing dirt and debris. Finally, we kiln dry the siding. By kiln drying, we stabilize the wood and remove any insects or mold that can be present in the siding.
Examples of Projects
Reclaimed barn wood can be used for many projects to enhance any kind of space, no matter how rustic or modern the space is.
If you are looking for a way to showcase your reclaimed barn wood, use it as an accent wall. It breaks up the traditional look of a room with the same wall color by giving the room an eye-pooping, rustic look.
Barn Wood can also be use to bring a natural look to any space in the house in the forms of tables and chairs. Although not as eye-catching as an accent wall, interactive pieces such as furniture can give your home a homely feel.
If you are looking to enhance a modern space, small accents such as bookshelves can help give a natural look. Floating bookshelves, such as the one pictured above, are an easy DIY project you can do to decorate your walls.
